How to Inspect Metal Shelving Before Shipment
Pre-shipment inspection helps buyers reduce quality problems before products leave the factory. For metal shelving and storage racks, inspection should include appearance, structure, stability, accessories, packaging, and carton marks. A clear inspection checklist helps both the buyer and supplier understand the expected standard.
1. Check Product Appearance
The first step is to check the product surface. Buyers should look for scratches, dents, uneven coating, stains, and visible defects. For black metal shelving, coating consistency is important because surface problems are easy to see under light.
If the product includes shelves, decorative parts, or plastic feet, these parts should also be checked. Appearance defects may affect customer satisfaction, especially for retail and e-commerce products.
2. Confirm Dimensions and Structure
Inspectors should measure key dimensions such as height, width, depth, shelf spacing, and tube size if required. The product should match the approved sample or confirmed specification.
Structural inspection is also important. Check whether holes, connectors, screws, and shelf positions are correct. If the structure is not accurate, assembly may become difficult for the final customer.
3. Review Assembly and Stability
For shelving units, assembly testing is useful. The inspector can assemble one or more samples to check whether parts fit correctly and whether the product stands steadily after assembly. Wobbling, missing holes, or wrong accessories should be reported before shipment.
The instruction sheet should also match the actual product. A clear manual reduces customer questions and returns.
4. Check Packaging and Carton Marks
Packaging inspection should include carton quality, inner protection, accessory bags, labels, barcode stickers, and carton marks. The quantity in each carton should match the packing list.
For export shipments, carton marks should be clear and consistent. If the buyer has private label requirements, labels and packaging artwork should be checked before shipment.
